Alongside the release of the world's first 1.5 TB desktop hard disk drive (the ST31500340AS ) Seagate Technologies also unveiled a half terabyte or 500 GB notebook / laptop device under the Momentus guise, a favourite for notebook data recovery.
There are two new series of laptop hard disks being released the Momentus 5400.6 and also the Momentus 7200.4, both of these devices use Perpendicular recording (PMR) methods to reach capacities greater than any current retail offering.
The 5400.6 features capacities ranging from 120GB to 500GB, with a 5400 RPM motor speed and 8MB of cache. The 7200.4 comes in sizes from 250GB to 500GB with a 7200 RPM motor speed and 16MB of cache.
All of the new products have a SATA II interface supporting an optimum data transfer rate of 3Gb/s, Seagate even touts the 7200.4 as a desktop replacement in terms of performance, this drive will likely find its way into high-end notebook computers such as the Apple MacBook Pro and the Dell XPS and Alienware series of laptop computers.
The 5400.6 and 7200.4 should be expected towards the end of the year with Seagate reporting availability of Q4, 2008.
